What is the difference between the AOD and E4OD trans?

Hold out for someone with more knowledge than I, but if I'm not mistaken, the AOD was the first version and the E4 came out later, supposedly better...

AOD overdrive trans not controlled by computer. Regulated by a TV(throttle valve) cable which needed to be adjusted just right.
E4OD electronically controlled re:computer: transmission.
Both of which have overdrive.
