I've got my C-powered '78 F-150 on the road, it had a 351M originally. If you want to do this swap be sure to get all your accessory brackets and manifolds with the motor, otherwise it's a real pain to track it all down separately. You need 302/351W mounts which work fine with your perches. As you've read, you'll need the tranny that came with the C motor, but you don't need to do anything with the driveshaft. Your right exhaust manifold on the 400 won't work with the C because it interferes with the starter, but getting one off a 400 powered Cougar or LTD will work, but not line up with your existing exhaust. If you find any commercially available headers, I'd love to hear about it.If you're serious about this, I may be able to answer specific questions, but I think the major points are covered here.
well my dads friend has a 400 horse 351 he wants to sell me real cheap, it was puled from a torino as a backup engine for his mach1, it was totally rebuilt. anyway i was told i couldnt do it b/c of my bell housing and motormounts
if you could help me out i would greatly appriciate it
im 16, and we all klnow what that means=stupid
thanks
I don't think 16 means stupid, nor do I think I'm talented enough to help too much, but I'll be happy to tell you major things to look out for. If you could get a junkyard small bellhousing C6 from a truck (linkages match that way) you'd be in good shape, the only other real pain is the right exhaust manifold. Be sure he throws in the brackets for your accessories, or you'll be in for a long hunt. The motor mounts are less than $30 at any parts store.
When I was 16, 16 meant impatient. Take your time, get your questions answered before wrenching or purchasing and don't force anything and it's within your reach.
