transmition interlock???
The interface arm is the mechanism between the shifter handle on the column, the transmission interlocking mechanisms and the shifter cable to the transmission. The easiest way to replace the tube & plunger is to drop the steering column. At Ford, the service guys tells me this is a common failure and they see several per day. This mechanism is used on all Aerostars, F-series, Econolines, etc.
Ford recommended I replace the tube (1F1Z-7212-AA), the plunger (F7DZ-7R264-AA) and the two bushings (F3TZ-7L278-A). The parts cost me $70.00 (Canadian) and took me around 3-4 hours to remove & replace. Now our van is back on the road!
While I had the steering column apart, I noticed there is a small solenoid as part of the steering column, which is activated when the ignition is on and the engine is running. Once the brake pedal has been depressed, the solenoid de-energizes and releases an arm that unlatches the tramsmission interlock. The owners manual defines the manual override as being "...turn off the engine (releases the small solenoid) and then shift into Neutral". Of course, the key needs to be in Run.
That's my 2 bits worth. I hope this helps your quest.
