There is no way to set the timing right on my engine. The distibutor is turned all the way clockwise, the top of the block is in the way so I can't go further. It's getting worse every days (a lot of pinging sounds).
I've changed the timing chain and it does not seem to help.
I think it may be the cam that is in really bad condition. Am I right?
Is the distributor one tooth off? Did you remove it when you replace the timing chain?
If so, you have to set the motor to #1 at TDC, pull the dist, set the rotor to point to #1 with the vacuum advance pointed to the front of the motor and reinstall the dist.
If the dist doesn't drop into place, it is because the oil pump shaft isn't lined up. Slowly rotate the motor by hand, keeping pressure on the dist. until it drops into place. Recheck TDC then start it and try to set the timing.
I tought there was only one way it can fit. The rotor is always a little on the right off number one once the piston number one is up. I didn't know about rotating the crank while pushing down the distributor. The thing is when I try to fit the distributor in another way it block, I can't push it down all the way, so I will try rotating the crank while someone else push down the distributor.

The reason it will not go down all the way is because the oil pump shaft(Hex) is not lined up with the dist. shaft(Hex).
You have to install it pointing to #1 and then rotate the motor until the oil pump shaft lines up. At this point it will drop down all the way.
When you have done this go back and check that the rotor is pointing to #1 at TDC.
You should rotate the motor manually, because the starter jumps the motor too fast.
I understood the first time you told me. I did it many times but I didn't know about oil pump shaft that is not aligned. I may fix it today, after all these years...
