Glow plugs

Dumb question but I need to know. When you turn the key on the wait to start light comes on then goes off like normal but what I want to know is this. If I turn the key on and the light goes out are my glow plugs still heating up until the key is turned off or do they stop heating when the light in the dash goes out. Thanks guys...

Your glow plug will still cycle on and off after your light goes out depending on the temp outside. Some one else maybe can give more detail.

I believe the glow plugs will cycle for a certain amount of time, however if the ignition is left on for a few minutes I have noticed that the wait to start light will come back on. At this point, I think you would have to recycle your ignition.

When your wait light goes out, power to your plugs is shut off and they start to cool down, if you don't start the truck they will cycle agian to heat them back up so you can start the truck.

The glow plug system is electronically controlled by the powertrain control module. If the temperature is below 55°C (131°F) the powertrain control module will energize the glow plugs immediately after the key is placed in the ON position. Then, depending on the readings from the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor and the barometric pressure (BARO) sensor, the powertrain control module determines how long the glow plugs will be on.

Glow Plugs - PCM-Controlled
The intake manifold glow plugs are located in the cylinder heads, under the valve covers.

The glow plugs are self-regulating. If the engine oil temperature is above 55°C (131°F) , the powertrain control module will bulb-check the WAIT TO START lamp but not energize the glow plug relay.

All this is to say the glow plugs will often stay on after the wait to start light goes out on the dash in the Power Strokes. If you watch your voltmeter it will show a discharge and will come upp a few volts when the glow plugs go out.

At least that is my experience with my 95 and with the others I have worked on.
