i have a 94 ranger and im looking for a air intake or something for my ranger. i noticed that many people with 94s have them.ive looked for them all over.im thinking people might get them for a dif year and custom fit itbecause most look like they dont belong. but i was just wondering do they even make them for a 94 ? any suggestions??
Go on ebay or make your own from PVC pipe - I recommend the PVC pipe and a K&N filter, but don't bother with any intake without headers and new exhaust system.
kustomz.com, has cone filters available that use the factory air tube, but replaces the air box assembly, and is less than $100. That's what I have and it works very good. ifab.net has a whole kit for $143. http://www.ifab.net/products/93intake/index.html
Whatever route you go, consider taking the time to fab up an air box of some sort to seal the intake air from the hot underhood air. I made one up out of cardboard and wraooed it with metalic tape so it still looks respectable. I have a pic in my gallery if you're curious. If you don't do an air box or heat shield of some sort, there is a chance your mileage will suffer due to the hotter air entering the intake. Basically hotter air is les dense so you don't get as much air as if you made it a cold air intake. ran about $175 or something may be cheaper now. But it is for a 95 and later. Seems the top radiator hose sits lower on the 95 on trucks. Mine fits well and did help some, but as above you need to match it to an exhaust. Mine is the 4.0 and I have installed the air intake (lots highway so they said dont need the airbox) and then I put in a 2.5 inch exhaust with hi flow cat and free flow muffler (magnaflow) The system is 2.5 inches all the way from the Y pipe, and the guy put in minimum bends, and it exits same place as the OEM did behind the wheel. It was fabricated at a local independent high performance shop and ran around $400 but was well worth it. Can now mash on it and bury the needle even when in 5th. I wouldnt worry about headers unless going to engine mods. One shop where I had some work done guy had an expedition with headers etc and did not have the performance that I have. He even had a bigger T body in it.
I consistently get 20mpg at 75-80mph and 16 around town 15 with the ac on.
You know, IF you just make your own, and then use aluminum dryer ducting to route the air from the outside under the bumper and then stick the filter as far in to the other end as it will go. that will solve the hot air problem under the hood and act as a forced air intake that some mustanges have. I'm thinkin about tryin it myselft. Could save you $$$$$$$$ and be easy. be sure to paint the ducting to look professional and so it won't rust. just a thought.
To me it seems that dryer ducting would add a lot of trubulance due to the spiral wire that runs through it. I'm gonna mess around with PVC and see how that treats me.
Couple of things on the homebuilts using PVC. I was going to make one and started to buy the stuff, problems I ran into is that the silicone material is about $25 per foot for all the right connectors to be made, the cost of fabricating an filter mount is something to be looked at, I bought an old MAF on ebay for about $10 and cut it up, but then I could not find the right airfilter to fit and they tend to be $$, then the thing is not shiney and stuff. In addition I could not find the right size PVC either 2.5 or 4 inch.
I also read someplace that the PVC begins to breakdown from the temp and outgas stuff that is not real good for the engine/intake. If ya think that it get dirty runnin a K&N just think how it will be with plastic goop thrown into the mess.
Anyhow thats why I just went and bought a premade one. I like to fabricate stuff in the back yard, but once again this was going to cost almost as much as a premade if I went the whole route of getting the silicone tubing for the connectors, the filter etc. Just something to think about.
thanks.. so it wouldnt be possible to get like a 95 one id have to find a 94... i dont even know if they make them but i founds this but the pipe looks to big to fine under my hod the hose is already cloe to the alatnaort and raditor hose
they don't make one for the 94, i inquired about that to many companies, their reasoning was that its performance wouldn't be increased because of the placement of the original airbox, go figure, but a homemade one is what i'm working on, i just have to get the pvc tubing to do it. I have a 94 3.0l so needless to say, i've looked
maybe you missed in my post, mine is a 3.0L not a 4.0L, I know they are available for the 4.0L, but they are hard to find, but they are not available for the 3.0L, I have asked around to all the major providers and they sent me to the same place, it was some company on the west coast, they gave me that explanation i said in my previous post, if you can find one for the 3.0L, then I will be quiet, but until then, I haven't found one, thats what I will continue to say, and I will continue working with my cone intake and and pvc pipe. thank you, and good luck in your search
Sorry, I was directing my post at blackandsilver94, as he is the one who started this thread and it appears he is still looking for one to fit a 94 4.0 (that's the motor listed in his gallery.)
Streetsmartdesign (http://www.ssd4u.com/streetsmart_022.htm) has a setup for the 95 3.0. As I stated earlier it is an interferrence fit with the upper radiator hose, give them a look see and call their tech support they were very easy to work with. When I tried to link based on my earlier mails all I got was motorhaven so you may have to cut and paste the above url to get there. $149 without the heatshield.
