Just got back from my local Adavanced Auto Parts store to run a diagnostic test on my 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 Litre. It was idling real rough sometimes on start-up online when cold so I obviously changed the plugs. They looked bad so I figured that was the problem with the idle and my poor gas mileage. Well the trouble again was there. The codes that I brought home (which I had NO idea what they ment) were as follows. PO442 Evap Emission Control System Leak (Small) P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) and P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 2). Can someone please elaborate on these codes and how I can get them to go away as well as my check engine light?
Check out the "read first" at the top of the page marked Technical information.scroll down to emmissions and click on OBD II codes.this will explain the code and list possable causes.
I went through all of the lines connecting to the EVAP sensor and didn't find one leak. Used soapy water to check for leaks all down each line, one from the intake manifold and the other from the fuel tank neck. Could possible the whole EVAP system be bad? The lines look fine, but could the sensor and all the other junk that is contained in the "little black box" that all the hoses go to go bad? As far as the Lean codes, what are some troubleshooting techniques to check for low fuel pressure, and vaccum leaks? Which lines are vaccum lines and which aren't? I try to do most of the work on this truck, but these computer codes aren't my strong point. Give me a simple carbuereted 351 or even a Johnson outboard motor and I'll make them run like new.
