Ford 302 timing problems

Hi, I have a boat that the engine went bad in. It was a 302HO 1990 and I got an engine out of a ford car 1980`s that had been wrecked. I had to change the crank from the HO to the 302 because the flywheel would not interchange. I used the flywheel and balancer that matched the crank for the HO. I did not change the cam from the HO to the running 302. Now when I crank the engine it hits on every other cylinder. The cylinders that are not hitting are getting fire and gas. You can take 4 plug wires off and the rpms and sound never changes. I have tried both firing orders and the newer firing order makes it run worse. Do I need to also put the cam in this engine that was in the HO? I hope someone has some tips. This has been a hair puller.

If your using the non ho cam, then the standard 302 firing order is what your after. Just to double check, the cylinders are numbered, facing the front of the engine, left side closest to farthest from you 1-4 right side closest to you to the farthest from you 5-8...firing order 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8. The crank shouldn't make a difference. Why it would fire only four cylinders is odd, as the rotor is stupid it spins and fires. Could it be 180 degrees out, put finger over the first cylinders plug hole, turn engine over, as the air compresses and leaks past your finger your on the compression stroke, bring the damper up to "0" then go to 6BTDC, install the distributor and make sure the rotor button is pointing directly at the number one plug terminal. She should fire and run. If that doesn't cut it, then you have electrical problems, I would think. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try that tommorow. I forgot to mention that I am using a prestolite distributor that uses points and condenser with a built in spark advance.

Hi again, I was wrong about every other cylinder getting gas. I have taken the carb off and everything looks fine. It is a holley 2 barrel. I can even pour a little gas in each barrel and it still doesn`t get any gas to the missing cylinders. I know that the plugs for the cylinders are firing. I took each plug out and cranked it and I am getting good fire and it you can hold finger over the hole and it blows your finger off of it. I checked the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke and the #1 wire is in the right position on the distributor. I am running prestolite marine distributor with points. Somebody please try to help me before I set this boat on fire. Thanks

Might try another carb...or rebuild the one your using...if that is possible.

If you have fuel and you have spark, and the timing is set correctly, you have compression on all cylinders, so the only thing I can think of is the carb. later

I have a new carb on it now. I am going to work on it this weekend. Maybe I can get some gas going to those 4 cylinders. I suppose one side of the carb runs 4 cylinders and the other side runs the other 4?

I had a similar problem on my '68 F-100 in '69. running stock 2 bbl carb, and 4 of 8 were not producing power. A kill test showed the first and last on the Rh bank, and the middle two on the Lh bank were near dead. Good spark, comp. etc= clogged main jet.
