I have a 353 detroit diesel that is giving me hell. When the engine is running it smokes like a *******, and i know detroits smoke a lot but this sucker is draining the pan in T-30 seconds so i got problems. I believe the problem to be in the scavenging blower but i dont understand how or why its getting oil into the blower and therefore into the air intake. please advise.
The oil problem could be, and pobably is, the blower seals. Unbolt the intake cover from the blower and look on the turbines, and where the shafts are connected to the bearings for fresh oil. Bad seals are common on the 53, 71, and 92 series Detroit engines. If they sit a lot it makes them brittle. Luckly, they are fairly easy to change out.
If the leak into the intake is to severe the engine will tend to start burning its own oil for fuel and run away, with no way to control it. Hopefully you have your emergency stop cable hooked up and all componets are working.
I hope this is it. I would say cracked rings, or broken piston, but you are talking too much oil useage, and they will cause puffing smoke instead of constant white smoke.
The seals are mounted in the blower case ends, where the rotor shafts connect to the bearings. They are between the bearings and rotors, so the bearings will oil, but not fill the intake full of oil.
