I am buliding up my 91 f150. I have the 351w efi. I'm trying to find ways to add horse/torque. I'm thinking about putting a stroker kit in. What is involved. Will i need to change the computer. Cost estimate?
I did a little research on E-bay ! A decent crank will cost $250 and will make it a "383" cleveland rods and 302 pistons could be cheap depending where you go. The main problem is tweaking the speed density system but it can be done.(more research)
good luck,
Kyle
Why stroke to get more power? I have nothing at all against stroking assuming all the rest of parts match(heads, cam, intake etc) Before spending a bunch of money on building a stroker, try a cam, head, exaust swap. Eg, Edelbrock or AFR heads, Comp cam#35-255-5, and long tube headers. By changing all three your power will increase to about max flow of the 19lb injectors 320hp and over 400fl/lbs torque. That's what I'm building for my '92 Nite right now.
Stroker uses the stroker crank, stock rods and 1.6" compression height pistons (stock 302) with a good cam,the stoker and only stock heads, you will be around 400ft lbs and 260hp. A set of $500 fully ported E7 heads and you'll be over 300hp and 450tq.
Instead of a 383...you could opt for a 393 scat crank ebay 265, use your stock 351w rods and 302 pistons. Save your having to spend more money on 6.2 rods for the 383. Wouldn't be a "long rod" setup but you'd get 10 more cubic inches.
I agree with JWTAYLOR, The 393 is the most cost effective way to stroke that motot. The 302 pistons are cheap, and you dont have to purchase new rods. 10 cubes isnt much, but the cost savings is good. You end up saving almost $300-$400 depending. But hey, if you got the bucks for that...why not just put in a supercharger? It'll increase your H/P and Torque substantially. Either way, you'll have to put in bigger injectors.
What kind of power are you looking for? Edelbrock or AFR heads and an rv cam with some headers ought to get you some nice power at least 300 hp (conservative).
I've just got a 302 in my truck('92 Nite flareside) and just by adding shorty headers and dual 2.5" into 3" flowmaster exhaust, MDS coil, wires, plugs, cap and rotor, my truck now runs 15.8 sec. quarter @ 85 mph on trail tires....that's with a 3.08 gear too.. So if you run a long tube header with good exhaust and good ignition components, you'll notice a big jump!!!!
