Check engine light-codes

After driving for 25-30 min (local) when it is pretty warm out the check engine light will come on. Sometimes it stays on other times it will come on for a min or two then goes out and then come back on. I want to go to Auto Zone to have them check the codes but the check engine light isn't always on. I know I can check the codes myself with a piece of wire but I don't want to pull over and deal with the hassle of wires. I know I can buy a code reader, but does that tell you the numbers or do you still have to count the lights? Thanks for any help.
I have a 92 V-8 5.0 F-150 super cab

A code reader will count the blinks for you. Also, you don't have to read the codes the instant the check engine light comes on. The code is stored in the computer's memory, so the next time you get a chance to pull them, the code should be there.
