Possible transmission problem - help!
About three weeks ago, it started to shake going up a hill. Regular, rapid lurching. Now does it everytime I accelerate, when under load, and often at constant speed. I also feel jerking with the same frequency (but less intense) at idle in drive. Shifting to neutral makes the problem go away.
Transmission fluid was low, so I added, but the problem hasn't gone away. Last week, was driving up a mountain (4 chains on), and had no problem until, all of a sudden, there was no forward movement whatsoever. I was alone, and so couldn't say for sure, but it didn't feel like any of the wheels were spinning. I returned to the van two days later and drove out with no problem.
That hasn't happened since, but the shake is still there, and getting more frequent.
This problem, whatever it is, smells expensive. Can anyone provide me with a heads-up before I take it to get serviced so I know what I'm getting into?
Thanks
Gadget.
i just hate being the bearer of bad news it is no fun. hope i helped some though.
>like you need a trans re-build. this is about $600.
Not for a rebuild worth having -- try $1200 and up.
There are several weak spots in the A4LD, and the cheap rebuilds don't address the weak planetary carrier, or the failed thrust washer damage issue, as well as some other upgrades.
Around here, if you can find one, a junkyard A4LD (for 2WD, at that!) runs $600. You might get a 30 day warranty at that price.
I've still got a line on a complete 5 spd conversion from a junkyard van for $650, if anybody's interested.
