My 1990 Aerostar (141,000 miles) with a 3.0 liter engine quit running and now it doesn't move in any gear. When I accelerated from a stop sign the engine seemed to quit running and I lost electrical power (radio memory was dumped). As I was coasting to a stop I shifted into neutral and tried to restart but the starter just clicked. When I stopped and tried to start the engine the starter clicked a couple of times then it turned over slowly. About the forth time the engine started as normal but the van would not move. I don't recall any noises. The engine always starts but no movement. I'm pretty sure the computer doesn't control all the gears in this transmission. I don't want to put a lot of money into the thing. Has anybody had any luck with used transmissions? I intend to sell it as soon as I change the tranny.
Before you run out and replace the transmission or spend money having someone else look at it, check the simple things like the shift linkage (including up by the column) and the gear selector shaft that goes into the transmission (the one that the cable/linkage connects to and goes into the transmission). You may have to remove the pan to get a look at it.
Be careful with transmission rebuilds as there are some hard parts in the A4LD that should be rebuilt/replaced, otherwise you may run into problems sooner than you should. Generally speaking, the cheapie rebuild places won't do this. I have no direct experience with A4LD rebuilds, this is just what I've heard and read from others.
