If it's blue (oil usually) the common causes are 1) piston rings and/or worn cylinders, 2) valve guide seals. If it smokes worse after sitting overnight, then the problem is usually valve guide seals....
There are actually several. Do you have any particular symptoms? Blue smoke could be oil, black is fuel, and white is coolant. Now each of these have several possible causes.
I cant really tell what color it is...maybe white....but its only a little bit of smoke after i turn off the engine. Its coming from the lower half of the engine i think, near the exhaust manifold. I ran it for a minute and the block was hot. is that normal? also one of the times the carb shot a little flame out of it. Is that too much fuel getting to it because it kinda backfires some?
Also when i am turning on the truck i need to give it some gas for it to start up. It rotates but just needs a little push of the accelerator.Just thought that might factor into everything else
smell that smoke! antifreeze smells sweet, oil just stinks!(think sulfur) which exhaust man. is it?
your carb sounds like its running rich, turn the enrichment screws in (clockwise) all the way(not too tight) then turn them out 2 1/2 turns. if the truck wont idle, then turn them 1/2 turn out, revving for 15 sec. between adjustments, until it will idle. you might have to replace your power valve because of the backfire(one can ruin it).
you should be able to start your engine like this: turn the key to "on", depress acc. pedal to the floor and release, start truck without giving it any gas. if it wont start like this then you've got more problems.(which im sure the friendly people of this site can help with!) good luck!
Is the smoke in the engine compartment or coming out the exhaust? If it is in then engine compartment and doesn't smell as described above, you probably have a valve cover or something leaking oil. If it does have the smell then you may have a coolant leak. I agree that it sounds like you need to make some adjustments to the carb. but it probably wouldn't hurt to put a timing light on it and see how that lines up too.
alright heres some more info....changed the oil and flushed the radiator today...the engine now starts without having to give it any accelerator, still backfires but probably still need to do some carb adjusting.Still got that smoke after running for a minute coming from only the drivers side, near the exhaust manifold. I smelled the smoke and it didnt seem to stink bad to me. I felt the side of the engine that is smoking and the spark plug wires were real warm and so was that side of the intake.Any info to the current symptoms would really help me alot.
I might have missed something, but if the engine is running than the engine is going to heat up and everything gets hot, including the plug wires. Am I mis-interpreting something?
