I would check for oil leaks. No that really isn't a feasible explanation, if the pistons were getting that hot on one side your motor would be locked up by now or you would have some other very major problems.

thanks for all the replies. I put some new valve cover gaskets on and adjusted the carb and everything is good at this point. No smoke and no backfiring. thanks again.
