how much torque did the old motor's actually make at he tires compared to today's cars? I know the 460 in 70 was rated around 300hp and 500ft.lbs. but what did a lincoln that had this motor actually dyno at?
The 302, is a good motor for a car, but when you really want to pull or haul something you need a bigger engine.
the 5.0 in my last truck was a good solid work horse, 95 F150 4x4 extracab 8ft bed with the e4od w/370,000 miles onit no mods, would pull 7000lbs with no problem, and yes it did work the engine hard, but it did do the job, and i was not easy on the truck.
p.s. i bought this truck with 40k on it and went through two engines , each lasting 150,000 miles but i never touched the trans . the 302/5.0 is one tough engine........
i also had a 91 GT ragtop 5sp that would flat out git it.....
The 400 sucks, toruq first. The FE's are unbeatable and can be built to have tons of torqe. My modded 352 puts out 400ftlbs. Thats more then plenty and it is a mild build. I towed a 10,000 pound tralier with it up some steep grades and it was overlaode big time but the 352 pulled fine. I even passed a few people going up. It still had more then enough power even when it was overloaded. It is one hell of a towing truck now.
I never got to drive a 390, so I picked 460. Gobs and gobs of torque that old truck of mine had.
And the old motorhome we had (90 Econoline, 27' Glendale Sterling) had the 460 as well. No problems passing uphill either.
SWEET! i'm buying a 1990 29' Class A RV with a E350 front clip and a 460.
Glad to hear i'll have plenty of power and torque. (only 46K miles on the motor BTW)
I'd agree that the 300 puts out high low end torque (260 at 2k rpm)... but the 302 puts out more torque than a 300, but at 3000 rpm not 2000. Neither are particularly high (260-270 isn't much), so I feel neither are wonderful.
That PSD wasnt listed I might be a little crazy but not stupid!
LOL...I thought you mean listed in the threads above. You could probably take my truck if you had the gears to do it and the motor was built out enough. 3.73 with 35's is kinda rough. I've seen a Jeep ****** out pull a built up 460 purely on gears. The 460 was 2WD though...
302 - 185 HP @3800 rpm's, 270 Tq @2400 rpm's
300 - 150 HP @3400 rpm's, 260 Tq @2000 rpm's
The 302 has to go 400 rpm's further to get MORE torque and horsepower? I know the 302's torque curve isn't as flat as the 300's, but I refuse to believe that it is that far behind the 300. I have read this over and over, but I didn't realize the torque peak was that close. And the 302 can at least live above 3000rpm's. I used to be a 300-is-better guy, but since I've actually taken the time to read up on the 302 - it's not that bad. It isn't quite the grunter that the 300 is, but its not a weakling either.
