Well I found the VSS, unplugged the connector, removed the bolt, removed the sensor and found some metal filings on it. Wiped it down, replaced everything and the OD light still flickers. I'm kinda confused. The OD button still works. I know this by watching the RPMs. If that VSS is bad, wouldn't it cause the OD button not to work? I would think that the OD is controlled by something on or in the tranny. Any guesses??
if there was metal fillings then i would pull your rear diff cover and inspect the rear gears and tone ring. that sensor you unpluged uses the tone ring.
those fillings are not a good sign, replace the gear oil and if there is spider gears as well in there then you have a limited slip and you must add a special additive in there along with the gear oil. most any parts store would carry this.
I never changed the diff. oil since I owned the truck. When I remove the cover, what's this tone ring supposed to look like?? I may replace the diff. oil with Mobil 1, if I can find it. I heard that you don't need the additive when using Mobil 1. Is that true??
I wouldnt count on it. there is a reason they sell that stuff seperatly.
the tone ring will be on the left side when looking at the rear diff cover. you will know it when you see it. almost like a saw blade inside the rear diff. if any of the teeth look bent or missing that could be part of your problem.
That i dont know. but it looks like maybe it would need that. someone else will chim in im sure regarding this portion. I removed my 8.8 all together for a 9" so i dont have to worry about it any more.
sorry i cant give you a better answer at this point
I broke out the Haynes manual and it does not show the tone ring in any of the exploded views of differentials. It just mentions that the rear VSS(they call it something like RABS) uses this ring and the entire diff. needs to be disassembled in order to replace it. Maybe this weekend I'll open the cover and take a look. The manual doesn't specify the gear oil viscosity for the rear diff. It just states the Ford part number. What are the gear oil viscosities for the front and rear diffs. for a 94 Bronco??
just basic gear oil, i forget the weights. but if there is a limited slip in either end you will need the special additive. it comes in a toothpaste looken tube
the owners manual might be a tad general for that. best bet is to look on the tag located on the front diff. then post what it says here and someone can help ya. more than likely it isnt , it was a rare option but is out there for a selected few.
once you get started it will all come together, my manual was real general about it to.
I just checked the sticker inside the driver's door and here are some of the codes: Body = Y6 Trans = E Axle = H9. I found the factory sticker on the back of the front axle and wrote down what I could see: 3:54, STD, M44. I looked in my owners manual, in the lubrication section, and it mentions lubricating the speedo cable.
