When I open the tail gate of my 88 Ranger 4x4, I can faintly smell gas. (No, it isn't coming from the cap of the rear tank, or the exhaust pipe, because I checked.) What is it likely to be, is it a big job, and how soon should I get it fixed?
Do you see a puddle on the ground below the tank? I had a leak in my tank and i wiped it clean with brake cleaner then siphone out the gas into a jerry can, used jb weld to fill in the small pencil line crack. Its been holding up for over a year now. And yes you should fix it asap. I used to carry a jerry can in the back of my truck, it came in handy to get me home when i ran out of gas.
Any gas leak can be dangerous. I wouldn't smoke, or light any matches back there. Once you check for a puddle like 95f150 said, if you don't see anything then you can slide underneath and use you nose. A flashlight and some rags might come in handy too.
If you find it is mostly in the back, then I would tend to believe it is the rubber hoses for the feed and return lines on the top of the tank. If you just can't tell, and you want to be sure, pull the bolts (about 6) from the bed, disconnect the filler neck behind the gas door, and electical going to the lights so you can lift the bed off.
There is no puddle at all there, and not a strong smell, just a wiff, but I will get under there and take a closer look. BTW, what is jb weld?
thanks,
Charlotte
JB Weld = poor mans welding alternative. It is a 2 part paste/goo that you mix up and apply to a clean dry surface, and it will dry hard as a rock. It will hold some things as long as it isn't too much stress. You can get it at an auto parts store.

The same type of thing as "Liquid Steel." What a good idea!
