If you are talking 1960's and 1970's, all the heads were different, because, unlike Ford-Mercury-Lincoln or Plymoth-Dodge-Chrysler, every division made its own engines. Belhousings were mostly common, because transmissions were mostly common. There were differences based on if the starter was on the left or right.
If you are talking about more modern FWD applications, you need a good interchange manual. The 3800 pushrod V6 used by all divisions, is a Buick engine.
im really trying to figure out what all engines i can use for an 87 trans am, i have two parts engine that are no good, and i also have about 3 sets of heads, 2 intakes (tpi & 4bbl) my dad found a buick 350 and i might be able to get my friend to let me have the vortec 350 out of his yukon.
Buick, Olds and Pontiac haven't made a V-8 in about 20 years. They went to Chevy V-8's to save money. I have a 72 Pontiac Ventura II and it's tough to find pistons, rods etc. for the Pontiac 350 these days. Go with the Vortec, good motor, good mileage and aftermarket parts as well.
An 87 T/A will have a Chevy 305-350 in it. You can put any small block in and it will bolt, but the older motors won't accept many of the injection hookups and accessories. You can put most modern small blocks in no mods, except the vortec heads are different, the intake bolts go straight down instead of angled. There are ways to make it work, just have to be willing to do some drilling and filling. It depends what kind of power you are looking for, or just a replacement motor.
the vortec is out of my friends 96 "yuckon" he said that it's problem was something like bad compression on #5, i'll have to ask him again. the tpi intake for vortec heads is nearly 200 bucks, ouch. i might just look at swapping over fuel injection or something
