Stump pullin.
Stump pullin.
I grew a russian olive to about 20 years old and two trunks of about 16" diameter. Bugs got it and I had to take it down & out. After a first try I snapped a 10k lb. tow strap. I dug it out a lil more undercutting. Fixed the strap, by making a loop, dropped the F150 into low range and out she came.

Just a note to say y'don't need a blown 460 to do this kinda work.
Any F150'll do. Love my lil mule.

i remeber pulling a stump for my brother. i had an '84 Bronco XLT. 4 inch lift and stock 351W. i had the tailgate down so i could see while i was pulling. Big mistake. after a few pulls, it finally came out. It was actually kind of surreal. i had just let up on the gas pedal 'cause i didn't want to destroy my drive train. at that same moment, it broke free and came flying toward the rear of my open bronco; but it didn't fly all that fast. it landed square on my tailgate and then rolled into the cargo area. I think if i had not just let up on the gas, i would have had it smacking the back of my head.
then again, i didn't end up with a dented tailgate. gotta love ford tough.

This don`t have anything to do with fords but it does go to show that ch*vy sucks
.
A cuple years ago me and grandpa were clearing a field of trees , he would cut them down and strip them (I was too yung to use the chain saw that and he loves to cut trees down) . I would haul the logs off to the bottom of the field with his '85 3/4 ton (it might be a 1 ton) 350/4 speed with granny low 4X4 chevy only mods are the mud tires .
The ground was realy soft so some of the trees were a little fun to pull but some of them it couldn`t even pull it would just dig holes
. Later that day I wanted to see what my '77 CJ5 could do (304/3 speed all terain tires headers and 2 inch dual exhaust) I found the biggest log I could that the pick up couldn`t pull and chained up to it (it was all ready in 4hi because I needed it to get out of the creak
) I was surprized when I didn`t spin a tire pulling that monster of a log to the bottom of the field
.
Grandpa didn`t like that my old beat up, rusted out, run down jeep could pull the log that his chevey couldn`t

After Hurricane Erin in 1995, we had 13 pine trees down. The ground had got so soft, they just blew over, roots and all. We cut the logs in 8ft lengths, tied my 72 F100 (freshley rebuilt 300cid 6 cyl, 3.70 GEAR) to them, let out on the clutch and it idled pulling the logs across the property. When it came to the stumps, we left 8 ft of trunk on the stump, tied the truck to it and drove in a circle about twice, twisting the stump off the remaining roots. Cut the trunk off, strapped the chain on the opposite side of the trunk, and rolled it right out of the hole.

Don't pull out tree stumps with your truck. Trust me! Look in this thread here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...ghlight=stump+ I also posted there and you will see my honest educated opinon from a tree guy's point of view.

Wow who knew pullin an olive stump would cause such a stir..
I got a $2400 truck so I could bang it up, if need be, run it like an ol truck,
and care for it like a good dog. So far so good, (135k)only a main seal and
a re-do on the seat cover is needed. It don't leak bad,
so I jus top it off for now.
Nice truck.

'72 stepside..reminded me of the 71 6 cyl 3 sp my best friend in High School had, (er... his dad did). I went to HS in Puerto Rico and in summer we'd haul a big-*** bed full of coffee plants up this mountain on a road as wide as this screen. I was amazed at what that f100 6cyl 3 sp would do. Man it was like minute maid orange.

I read the above mentioned thread on pulling stumps. It seems to me the best method mentioned would be burning it out with charcoal and a 55 gallon drum as a chimney! You keep the wear and tear off your truck, its reasonably safe, and you have virtually nothing to get rid of in the end!
No, the best method is to use a stump grinder. I have seen people TRY to burn out stumps. It takes forever. Get a stump grinder in to have it done. Your truck will thank you!

HA! I remember when my father used to use his '78 F-150 to pull stumps, also push down trees till one almost landed on the roof, just missed and fell in the box. That old truck could pull! the timing chain went so we started using a '79 dodge van, then got the tractor. The truck pulled better than that tractor can.
Tractors, Grinders, and even excavators all great methods, but they cost money. In the city cops frown on burning out stumps. I only had small stumps 2-300lbs after they came out. The old truck worked in concert with undercutting the stump til only the tap was left. I never had to "floor it", just gently increasing pressure with the web strap rolled it out. But, this sure is an amazing thread.
