Atlanta?

Hey all. I am heading down to Atlanta, GA the weekend of Sept. 17-19. I do plan on posting in the GA forum as well, since I know people in this forum might have been, I figured I would hit both. The area I will be visiting is Midtown. I am going down to see a pretty exclusive two day concert. I fly down Friday morning, and fly back Sunday morning. Can anyone tell me what kind of town Atlanta is? What is midtown like? Do I need to watch my back at all times? Any info you guys could throw at me, would be appreciated. Im doing my research now on their public transportation system (looks like once dumps half a mile from my hotel). Im just a bit iffy about going down, since I dont like big cities to begin with. Thanks!

Midtown has become a kind of split personality...the north side of it is more urban/hip-hop type crowd. South side is where those in alternative lifestyles/relationships hang out. Do not go to a place called Bulldogs on P'tree or Backstreet unless you are one of the southside types. If you're out at night in any of the areas on foot, watch yourself. In the car, keep the doors locked at all times. Avoid P'tree Street after 10pmish on Fri & Sat...its bumper to bumper beep and creep traffic. MARTA is okay as public transit goes. Again, be aware of your surroundings. Don't buy tokens being sold by people on the street/outside the station. Any other questions? I worked in Midtown for 4 years so I can answer alot of them.

Yes, no matter where you go, especially in any big urban enviroment. NY, LA, Boston, Atlanta, etc. You might want to take a trip to Stone Mountain (Stone Mountain GA) at night on the weekend. I think they still have laser shows on the weekends. It is a very safe and friendly place to visit, night or day, and they have trails to hike to the top.

The MARTA system is probably one of the safest subways and is policed by plains clothes officers, so criminals tend to not commit crimes in the subway system.
I believe they have their own jail too. Like the previous person posted, watch out for individuals selling tokens or "asking for the time" outside the station.

Enterprise Rental has a lot of local locations and rates are fairly cheap for a sub compact. But, it is probably not worth the hassle if you can get by with the subway and taxi.

I spent two weeks there going to a tech school. I have fond memories of the.....Klassy Kat. Stone Mountain wasn't bad either.

As metro areas go, it is pretty nice and fairly safe. Do not be afraid to use Sir or other polite language.

There is an Enterprise location in mid-town and the Hartsfield airport. I checked the yellow pages. In my city they have three Home Depots, two Radio Shacks, a dozen auto parts stores, and numerous junk yards including a self serve "pull-a-part".

So, I usually do not venture into Atlanta proper much and do not have much to offer for information, sorry.

Except you have missed the Dukes Of Hazzard weekend.
