Rear diff. fluid question

Question Rear diff. fluid question

The manual says to use 80w-90 gear oil in the rear differential but the tag bolted to the rear says to use 75w-140 synthetic gear lube only. I think I can special order Redline at my local auto parts store. anyone know why the discrepancy and which lube to use in my 2000 expy with 3.55 limited slip rear?

gear lube

The manual is tellng you the gearoil that is used for a standard rearend without limited slip. Believe the tag on your rearend.

I agree to use what's posted on the tag. Most manuals were edited from previous years models and was probably overlooked. You can't go wrong if you use the synthetic.

Are you referring to the owner's manual or a general repair manual such as Hayne's?

I'm using Chiltons Manual for Ford pickups,Expedition/Navigator 1997-2000. I guess the info is sometimes generic. Glad I looked at the tag on the pumpkin.

I changed the title. ("synthetic gear lube in rear") It could have created "problems" later.

It's definitely synthetic, go with Motorcraft if you can. Also check with your dealer to verify if you need the Friction Modifier, otherwise your rear will vibrate like crazy.

Go with the tag...definitely...just changed the fluid in mine and I went with the Redline and their friction modifier...much much cheaper than the Ford dealership ($26 qt/dealer vs $8/qt Redline) and Redline is a very reputable manufacturer.

Unhappy rear fluid

Ford replaced the fluid with synthetic after the TSB was done for the LS chatter in turns. I would go with the synthetic from Ford just to make sure there isn't any warranty issues. I've already had the clutch pack and gears replaced in mine. 2 separate problems.
