tire wear

All of the tires on my Aerostar ('95 4WD) exhibit the classic signs of underinflation, according to the factory service manual. I keep the tires at max pressure, religiously check the pressure, am good about replacing worn suspension components promptly and get alignments regularly. Tire life has been good (83K+ from the OEM Michelin tires) but the tires would have been good for more if they didn't wear on the shoulders so much. The center of the tread still has quite a way to go to the wear bars but the outside and inside edges are almost there. The tires on my Ranger wear very evenly, even after only one alignment in ten years. I suspect the difference is due to weight.

Has anyone else noticed the same wear on their tires, especially on the 4WD versions? I'm wondering if truck tires will wear better than the passenger tires.

91 AWD, shows similar signs on the front but not rear. Over past two years have replaced, piecemeal, all front end components, I assumed the wear was attributable to one of these. I was getting rounded shoulders on both the inner and outer edges of the front tires. The rears still wear flat across. With these new tires, I intend to rotate at 5k rather than 7.5k as in the past to see if that plus the new suspension pieces will help. 83K on a set of tires is commendable, you must be doing all the right things. I personally believe the Aerostar suspension geometry is just hard on tires, with the load carried on the front end and the van's height producing considerable roll angle.
