Sometimes my 93 aerostar won't start. When this happens, I
turn the key and don't hear the fuel pump go on. I let it sit a few minutes turn the key--hear the normal fuel pump whrr and it starts up.
This usually happens after I drive it and try to restart it.
I have a new fuel pump--so I am thinking a relay but don't see any mention of a fuel pump relay in the haynes manual. They do mention a inertia switch for resetting pump but I can'y find this either.
On my '95, the inertia switch is located forward of the passenger door behind the trim panel below the glove box. It has a red button and you should be able to press the reset button without removing the panel. It's not uncommon for these to get flaky. Can't recall where the relay is located as I've never had to go hunting for one.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Mar-02 AT 04:18 PM (EST)]Almost every Ford in-the-tank style pump uses a fuel pump relay. Schematics for both the 3.0 and 4.0 show one. Look under the dash for about a 1" square, light green relay box with a four wire connector: Yellow,Red,Dark Green/Yellow, and Light Blue/Orange. (92-95 only)
(the 86 to 91 models for both 3.0 and 4.0 are Y,R,Tan/blk,Pink/blk)
I just thought of something that I've used to determine if a starter is bad that can be applied to the fuel pump, too. Next time it doesn't start, have someone hold the key in start and give the fuel tank a wack with a rubber mallet in the vicinity of the fuel pump. If it starts after you wack it, then you've found the problem.
