I Like This Truck, 2000 Ltd V10 Excursion.
But The Suspension Is Pretty Downright Lousy.
I Guess They Tried To Make It Low To The Ground For The Ladies.
I Want To Put The Springs From A 250 Sd In There To Give Her A Little Travel But Still Be Able To Pull 32' Camper Without Squatting Like A Stinkin' Chebbie Which Really P'd Me Off, I Thought I Was Buying A 250 Sd Truck With An Oversised Explorer Body, But They Really Screwed Those Springs Up Bad #1. #2 I Took It Down A 'mild' Little Trail With A Bunch Of Friends Piled In There, Just Cruising Around Hitting The Local Swimming Holes, (yes We Pile Back In Wringing Wet On Those Pretty Leather Seats And Move On The The Next Hiking Trail/water Hole Etc...)
Anyway, The Axle Was Pounding The Frame So Bad I Had To Slow Down, And Thats Pretty Embarrasing When You Have The Biggest, Toughest Strongest, Most Powerful Longest Lasting Truck On The Road.
I Even Cut Those Stupid Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers Out Of The Front, Put Some Bilstiens In There, But I Need To Get Some Positive Arch On The Springs. I Really Don't Like Them Being Backward Like That, They Look Like They Came Out Of A 76 Chevy Front, And The Rear !!! What's Up With The 70 Chevy K Series Half-a-helper Spring B.s., This Is A Ford Isn't It?
I Think That's About It, Oh, The Brakes Suck Too! Like There's A Brick In One Of The Tires. Probably Rotors Common With Sd Over 45k.
So Has Anyone Put 2 Or 350 Springs In The X? Front And Rear, I Really Don't Want My Truck To Be 5' Off The Ground With A Lift Kit, And I Don't Want To Loose The Gvw Rating.
Hmmmm. I have a 2000 7.3L PSD Ex 4X4 with stock suspension and I love it. It handles like a dream for such a large vehicle that weighs as much as it does. And it's much more nimble than the newer F-250 Super Duty crew cab 4X4 diesels I test drove. Those buggers has so much sway when I did the emergency lane change manuever during my test drive that I was worried for the wife's safety is she ever needed to do one.
Do some searching here on this topic. It's an often dicussed item. The suspension on the Ex is very soft. It actually has less payload than the Expedition, for example.
BTW, the phrase "Longest Lasting Truck On The Road" is from GM's commercials, I believe.
I bought it because I wanted It, I knew what I was getting, and that I could put real springs from a truck in there. I was just having some fun telling a story, (new to forums), or is there no humor allowed around here? Do we have to watch gm commercials for fun? Yes I know the longest lasting... thing is a gm commercial, thats why it's SUPPOSED to be funny, ha ha. BTW

Yes, it has slightly less payload than the expedition. It also has a higher GVWR than an F250, whats your point? If the 250 came with a factory camper not only would it have a lower GVWR it would also have a lower payload. When you present facts (and it seems you usually do), you cant just present the ones that support your "X has a 1/2 ton suspension" side.
hey jdadamsjr thanks alot, think I'll like this place
definately like the smiley faces.
I went over to the truck forums and found a guy that put a leveling kit in his 350 psd, he'll sell me the original front springs for a franklin. Wish I knew I was going to buy this X a couple 'o years ago when I lifted my '99 250 super cab, threw them in the dump
By the way, though they are the coolest trucks ITW (in the world)they're still pieces of metal junk that just haven't been used up and thrown out yet. So even though I have fun picking on the inferior junk, I still realize that they're all really junk so whats' it matter? just drive 'em pitch 'em and get another 'n.

The excursion comes with a factory camper? Mine sure didn't.

Some like to minimize the soft suspension on the Ex. I don't. I never said don't buy one because of it. It's just information that especially new buyers should know before buying this truck. It needs help to haul any kind of real load. Is it rocket science? No. But it is money and effort folks need to add in when they're thinking about the Ex as a towing vehicle.
I put V code SD springs on V10 Excursion, it levels front end and provides an extra 1.5 inches of travel. Best thing I ever did. Just wore out a set of Edelbrock shocks at 70K miles and put stock shocks back on and it still rides good. You need to change the front springs and you won't hit the bump stops. Just read all posts, ha.

Maybe yours didn't, mine did.

Well, I tow a 31 foot 7500 pound TT, the only help I have is a weight distribution system and sway control. So how big/heavy do I need to go before I get a real load? You stated some time ago that your GM products never needed WD or sway control. Ive never towed with a GM so maybe ignorance is bliss.
Exactly. I have a 8.5'x19.5' tall, double axle Vee nosed enclosed trailer which weighs about 4500 pounds going down the road. With the 2 previous 3/4 ton GM's I pulled that trailer with (99 'burb, 01 HD2500), I didn't need to add a thing. Very stable, no noticeable sway. When I got the 03 Ex Lmtd, which had the trailering package and factory anti-sway bar, the first haul with that same trailer was quite an eye opener. When passing or being passed by semi's, the rig would sway pretty badly. I'd really have to get ready for those events as I'd be all over the road.
I would've beefed up the suspension with air shocks or bags or whatever but circumstances didn't allow me time to do that before trailering season came around and then the DSB filing made me not want to spend any money on it.
I've now gone back to a 04 GM 3/4 ton (Yukon XL, same "camper" as the Ex) and the stability I'm used to is back. Again, not a thing added. No WD hitch, no suspension mods, etc. A 3/4 ton should not need any mods to haul a 4500 pound trailer. If I hauled a 7500 pound trailer, maybe I'd need a WD hitch on the GM's, too. But for my towing my trailer and owning 4 different new 3/4 ton's since 99, the Ex was noticeably inferior for towing stability/sway.
I fully understand why the Ex is the way it is and I'm not saying it's a bad truck. It just needs some additional things to make it stable while towing.
