I was driving my dads 1997 F-250 LD witha 4.6/5spd down the back road and I come to a corner. So I down shift into 2nd and start making the turn. I let the clutch out and hit the gas and the engine just revved up. So i was like WTF? So i put it into 1st again and let the clutch out, and nothing. So i tryed 2nd...nothing.. tryed 3rd...nothing...tryed 4th...revved up the engine a bit, and something went clunk and she popped into gear and stalled. So i started up the engine, put it in first and let the clutch out. Finally it started to move. BUT! It was in low range. The selector is in 2 HI but the truck is actually in 4 LO. I tryed putting it into 4 HI and N and 2 HI, but its unsucessful. No matter where the shifter is, its in 4 LO. So after a slow drive home down the dirt road, I crawled under the truck and check out linkages and such. All seems to be in order. I got my dad to move the shifter and it sounds like things are shifting in the T-case, but nothing is happening. So what do you guys think?? Time for a new T-case??
I've never heard of anything like that happening, but it definitely sounds like a t-case. How far did you drive it when you took it home? I'd put it on jackstands and see if all 4 wheels have power. If they do, I'd check the driveline for damage.
I drove about 15 miles home. Im not so worried about driving in down the dirt road in 4 LO, as much as I am concerned about buying a new T-case. The dirt road has lots of dirt/gravel and what not on it, so I think it should allow for enough slip on the wheels and such.
Have you checked the oil in the transfer case?
I would probably drain it out and see how much was in it and if it is clean.
It sounds like you may have some parts inside welded together.
