03 expedition off roading?

Has anyone played with the 03 Expy off road? I know it's capabilities are going to be very limited, but I was just curious how it was in light snow, mud or maybe sand. Not expecting anyone to tell me they run mudbogs.

i have to say that would be a first! now the excursion is based on the superduty frame/drivetrain....kinda like the big broncos being solely based on the F150. i am sure the expy's could stand a chance in light stuff but anything over the hubs and one would be through for the day!

Are they any different than the 98 Expy's? My buddy had a 98 that we took out a couple years ago. We were drunk off our butts and decided to take a detour near the Columbia in Washington. It did alright and we beat it good, 45+MPH offroad. We weren't in anything hairy to the point of getting stuck though but that truck really took a beating.

I don't condone drinking and driving. I almost lost my sister-in-law, nephew, and baby niece a few years ago by a drunk driver.

Well we weren't on the road. Central Washington is full of lots of nothing. We were out driving for a couple of hours in dirt and sand.

well, back to the expy, it is very capable. My father just got one and he runs around on construction job sites all day. his '03 expy has an outrageous 10 inches of travel on stock IFS, which I think is prety darned good. its nothing compared to the big broncos, careful what you say........................(jk guys).

That's pretty impressive for stock suspension! (Insert Fishy exclamation mark) I can say they're much more comfortable to ride in when you're hitting nasty bumps than my leaf spring suspension . . . but people don't scatter when they see an Expy coming.

the '03 expy's are all independent suspension no solid rear axle. it will have a smooth ride on the highway and be able to handle dirt roads and light trails but thats about it.

They are OK when compared to most other current "tuned for the pavement, drop the kids off at school SUV" but the big limitiations that I noticed were the tires. They come with a P265/70R17, which they call an AT (at least on some models) but it is definetly more of an all season tire tuned for ride and noise. I didn't get a chance to drive one in the snow, but moderate dirt / gravel trails were handled with ease. The other thing was the power, only 260horse for a 5600+ lb vehicle, not too much get up and go. The other thing that is interesting about these beasts is that the rear half shafts for the IFS run through a port on the frame, similar to the current 4 dr Explorer. This would probably explain why I haven't seen a lift kit for the Expedition or the Explorer.

With a soft suspension, decent tires and good driving. You can go anywhere that you really need to go in a 50,000$ machine. Overall they are built on a pretty solid platform that will hold up well to whatever you want to throw at it in stock form. A softly sprung vehicle will go places a stiffly sprung one cannot. The weight will be an asset in some places and a detriment in most others. They don't have lockers, so two wheeling is out. Overall they are very decent for what they are. A big fat, heavy truck.
