I haven't been on here in a while(been really busy).I've been towing my 28ft.Wilderness TT.all summer and am very impressed with the towing power of the 5.4l.I wasn't sure it would be enough to do the job, I thought I needed a diesel,/; but it handled the 8000# without any problems.Just hook on get on the highway and put it on cruise and let her go,no problems at all.Just thought I'd let you all know how impressed I am with it.
It's an '03 supercrew 1/2 ton.I never did figure out the milage.I'll have to next time.We have a 28ft. wilderness without any slideouts, can't remember the model number.
nsant, what's your gear ratio? I have 03 supercrew also and I tow a 27ft wilderness yukon. I don't have any problems either, but I have minor mods to my truck. Cat back 3" single out with Flowmaster, K&N air filter and 4.10 gear ratio, 3.5" lift w/33" tires. That's great that your happy with your truck. Do you have any problems going up grades?
Hi karenj,3:73 gears, strictly factory. No problems so far going up any grades,I've even left it on cruise, the truck just kicks into overdrive and holds it's speed right to the top.
Hi, I'm Jeff,
Very impressive Truck!, we have been wondering how our F150 King Ranch 4X4 Off road Super-crew would do as were getting ready to take it up to the Pacific Northwest for 6 to 8 weeks of camping.
We have a few questions if you wouldn't mind, the 8,000 pounds, was that gross, or dry weight of your T-trailer? Is your rig a 4X4? Does your truck have a factory tow package, and how much total weight was in the truck, not including your hitch weight, I assume you had 10-15% on the bumper, right?
What, if anything did you do to stabilize the rear end in towing?
Thanks in advance for your help here!
Jeff, and family...
I had a '98 F-150 but upgraded to the '03 F-250 with the 6.0 l diesel so that I could pull my '30 toyhauler.
My F-150 towed smaller loads like four motorcycles and gear OK - even up the Grapevine and some of the other SoCal mountain roads, but I do know that there's no way it would have towed my current trailer - the truck was too light and would have been pushed around by the trailer and the brakes would have had to work too hard to stop it.
Bonus is that the 6.0 l diesel gets better fuel mileage than my 5.4 l F-150 did too.
Still I loved that F-150 and if I hadn't upgraded to the larger trailer I'd still have it.
Glad to hear that your truck is working out well for you.
The 8000# was a loaded weight of TT water and all gear(just a guess).Yes my truck is a 4X4,and it came with a factory tow package. As far as the total weight of truck and TT I don't know. Also I don't know what the bumper weight would be.I use the weight distrubition system type hitch.
I have the 5.4L in my expy and was too more than impressed with the ability to pull my 24-ft 7200lb Toy Hauler. It slows on some grades, but i didn't expect anything different. I was going up the grades at 40MPH+ when I figured I would be down around 30MPH.
Better than I expected. That 5.4L is a great litlle motor. The new 3 valve with 302HP is even better than my 03' w/ 265HP.
I like that motor and will drive/tow with it for years to come.
