if u look into the tech articals on this site there is a full explination on how to do it with a aod. the eaod as far as i know is just an electronicly controld version so i would start by looking there to see how they done it
whd507, Contact- www.high-impact.net or www.baumannengineering.com, the only thing your over looking is reloacting the transmount a few inches rearward. The E4od is fine for most applications but if your using it for heavy towing you need to make some mods.
I'd go with a AOD.The E4OD is more expensive to rebuild should it go bad on you.But if you do get it in there, put an external cooler on it an bypass the radiator so you can keep it cooled down. That is the E4OD down fall it gets hot an grenades.
bhawkin2, Hey thanks for the input but the AOD won't stand up to the torque of a 460. Your right though the E4OD is expensive, I'm looking at one from www.high-impact.com. For a big block app. their running about $2,800 with HD convertor, but that includes all the mods to make them strong an reliable. Part of the reason the E4OD is prone to overheating is that they are set up to shift smooth like a car rather than a truck. True too that a AOD set up right will take up to 500hp but that's in a light to medium size car like a mustang or T-bird. One reason I'm going with an OD setup is to keep up with traffic, ave. speed out here in Calif. is 75-80mph+ that put's me in the right 2 lanes with the big rigs, another is engine longevity and maybe 2-3 more mpg. I'll keep you guy's updated as the project goes. Keep on truckin, Jim
i've been running aod's in both our trucks, f-100's w/302's, and unless you bought a custom built tranny, your right, they wouldn't stand a 460. although, putting an OD in these trucks really wakes them up, we've been so impressed with our trucks with OD, that we'll never run another truck with a 3 speed auto in it...
and for milage, i get 20 mpg with mine, 302/aod/9" w 3:50 gears, in an f-100...
I've been thinking of trying to swap a th400 tranny in. They can be had really cheap and can be built up to work behind the power of a 460 I hope. Found an adapter plate for mating it up to the 460 also. When ever I have some spare time and money I think I will try it out.
what would be the advantage of a TH400? it has roughly the same gears as a C-6, and comparable for strength. it takes a bit more power to run it, so a few less HP get to the tires VS a C-6.
get the O/D version of the TH400 and I could see going to the trouble.
whd507, That's what the Gear Vendor's unit does is replace the tailhousing. You guy's need to do your homework! The Gear Vendor's unit has it's advantages but in their own website they state a do it yourselfer could do an E4OD swap cheaper (gotta know what your do'in). Either way your look'n at about $4,000.00 (Gear Vendor's $2,995.oo plus $650.00 install (includes driveshaft mods) plus tax plus rebuild of your trans (if you need it)plus cooler plus other options (autoshift or manualshift kit). it all adds up!!!
I'm going to need to do a mild rebuild of the current 460 at the same time, so an E40D would be an easy swap. I can get an engine/trans from a 97 for about $1000 with warranty from the wrecking yard. then its just intake, distributor, etc, transmission controller and I'm done.
