My factory head unit died, so I moved stereo stuff to the top of the to do list, right now I'm just replacing the head and speakers unit with Pioneer replacements (talk trash if you like but as far as I'm concerened Pioneer is the poor man's friend). At first I'll just drive the speakers with the head units amp, and if it doesn't work out there are several reasonably priced 4 channel amps out there. The real problem is below 50hz, I go topless 7-8 months out of the year and I want to be able to take the faceplate of of the head unit and have everything else appear stock. Putting a conventional sub in a hidden place looks like it takes a lot of work and imagination. Has anyone tried mounting one of the new compact self amplified subs from Infinity, Clarion or Kenwood under the back seat? I think the Clarion or Kenwood will go right in there, the Infinity would probably require raising the rear seat height a couple of inches with mounting spacers and longer bolts. I don't need or want to be heard from 1/4 mile away but would like to get a little bottom end but still be able to park it with the top down.
I dont have any experience with the compact subs...but i would imagine putting them under the seat would make the seat rattle like crazy. Replacing the stock 6x8's with some good 6x9's will make a big difference.
I don't think those amplified subs would fit under the back seat, I have barely enough room to fit my amps under the back seat of my 94.
If your handy with wood construction, I have had the idea of building a center console and putting a 10" sub in the bottom of it facing down (downfire) and using most of the console as the enclosure for the sub. Just a thought I thought I would throw out there
I saw a box at the local pawn shaop that had two of the Sony Xplode 6x9s and a single 10". I was thinking about building a removable storage box that would go along the back of the rear seat and thought I could build it around it.
ah, Sony car audio, well if you plan on buying the box that you saw toss the Sony's, just my personal experience but Sony+Car audio= trouble. When you say removable storage box are you saying a kinda tool box and sub box mix?
I dont have rear passengers most the time, so this works for me.
First I invested in a Tuffy securtiy console. My last 3 decks got ripped off, so the $200 console should be worth the investement. I left the radio opening empty to make low lifes think theres nothing to steal.
If you look at the rear floor, the seat is mounted about 6 inches above the passenger footing area. Me and a bud made a custom box that holds 2 10" subs, and run alongs the passenger footing.
I mounted the amp where the factory passenger 6x9 is. Just took off the side panel, took out the speaker, and made a mounting bracket. I havent had any over heating problems yet.
The only con is if u have adult rear passengers, and they happen to be tall.
Wierd, the only one of those I have ever seen is the Infinity, but I really like the design and looks of the Clarion, very compact!! That would be my choice!
I have had nothing but trouble with Sony car audio. My latest head unit has needed to go back since I bought it in January. But I don't feel like pulling it and sending it in for a weeks, I shouldn't have to!
The problem is that it shuts off if you play the cd at anything more than half volume, after about a half an hour. It doesn't exactly shut off, but it stops putting sound out. Even if it is some sort of built-in protection, what is it protecting? Playing cd's at half volume?
It also sounds pretty crappy for 52X4 watts RMS. And I have Sony Xplod speakers.
I will never buy Sony again, and would advise others not to either.
BTW - Since I was looking at this thread, I decided to set my Sony up for service. After a half hour wait, I got a brain dead operator who took all the same information that I just gave the automated robot machine, and then had the nerve to tell me that I have to call back in two hours because of the system! I asked for the manager and got another brain dead jacka$$ who said that he would not call me back with a work order number and that I had to call back in two hours, at which point I lost my temper with these jerks and cursed at him and he terminated the call.
DO NOT BUY SONY - THE QUALITY IS LOW AND THE SERVICE IS TERRIBLE!
Since I am on the subject of Sony, I have also had the last two Sony VCR's that I bought break within a year (but out of the VCR warranty).
Sony used to make quality stuff, in the 1970's - and they still get by on their reputation. I bought Sony based on the reputation for a while but I finally got wise. The last three purchases I made from them were defective.
I have Rockford Fostgate 6-inch sub woofers in my truck they work great I built some mounts for the side pockets in the rear to keep them out of the way.
