about a week ago my power lock on my sliding door stopped working. All of the other door locks work fine. What could be causing this? it does get old having to walk around the car to lock it! could the doro's alignment make this happen? I tried cleaning the contacts, but that made no difference. Also, how hard is it to change the light switch for the sliding door?
People in other countries are worried about having enough food to eat and you're complaining about having to walk around to lock the sliding door for a week. C'mon man. Just kidding. Try having to do this for more than 6 months, like me. Mine just buzzes. It sounds like some motor spinning around, I thought the actuators were solenoids.
The malady that your Aerostar suffers from sounds different than mine. It's hard to say what could be causing your problem. I suppose door alignment could make this happen if the contacts weren't lined up. But there could be a number of other causes for not getting power to the lock, as well as the actuator itself failing. Only troubleshooting will tell.
Mine doesn't work either. Try applying 12volts of power directly to the bottom 2 contacts on the door while it is open, to test the wiring and actuator. Then put a test light on the 2 contacts on the pillar side, while poushing the lock/unlock button to see if there is power coming through. If both work, then the rubber bushings are not pushing the contacts hard enough against each other while the door is closed. It may be an alignment issue, or try adding shims beneath the contacts.
call auto zone and ask them how much a new one is, go buy it if its reasonable. atleast you all have power locks, i have to do the old fashioned way all the time. but it would be a great thing to have. hope you figure it out.
Great news! The rubber mounts with the contacts on them just pop right out if you pry them gently. I cleaned the contacs, and Praise the Lord!! The lock works now perfectly!!
I discovered a cute feature too - after I push the lock button, when the side door is open (i.e. it doesn't lock because the contacts are open) the lock has a 'memory.' After I slide the door closed, it locks itself!! Once I realized this, I checked the owner's manual and indeed it is a feature. (At least in 1994!)
