'87 Full-Size Bronco, 302 w/AC. Turn on AC, at idle, fan on HIGH, Voltmeter drops low, and alternator will burn eventually. Bought an AutoZone DL7745 with Lifetime Warranty in 1995. Have had it replaced numerous times, and it just burned again. Also, fan doesn't seem to move as much air as it should. Any suggestions?
Yea I would take the Alt to a rebuild shop and have them install better parts. Those cheese flex fans on Autozone rebuilds are cheap!. Also the rectifier is cheap so have them replace that too with a 95 amp one.
Those cheap rebuilds are made in Mexico or China. You get what you pay for. Last thing you can do is go to a junk yard and look for factory one. Most are cheap for around $35.00
You might want to check your idle speed. If it's lower than the spec, I would take the throttle body and IAC valve off and clean them.
Junk getting built up on the throttle butterfly and the IAC valve is a common problem. The computer maintains the idle speed, but if the IAC valve is wide open, that's all it can do. You might want to test the system after you clean it.
With the engine at idle, unplug the IAC connector. The engine should slowly die. If it dies right away, then turn the idle stop cable screw to open the butterfly a little bit, to let more air in the engine.
If the engine keeps running after you unplug the IAC, then the butterfly is too far open. Close it a little bit. What this does is get the amount of air flowing by the butterfly correct, so the computer will have full wide range control of the idle with the IAC valve.
