It's tough to say as there could be many reasons like bad water pump, slipping drive belt, bad radiator cap, low coolant, clogged radiator, incorrect timing, running too lean, etc. Does his car backfire on decelleration? What kind of car is it? Year? Anything changed recently? Is it just the exhaust that indicates a problem or does the temp gauge read hot too?
