tranny overheating

I have a 1990 4.0 liter Aerostar with an automatic transmission. Whenever I take it on a long trip the transmission overheats and it blows all the fluid out. What is causing this?

Not enough cooling capacity for the heat generated. Do you have a tranny cooler in it? It would be in front of the radiator (cooled from air going through the bumper holes). I have one in the van I'm stripping and would sell it cheap. You might need an extra if one ain't doing it. the only other thing I can think of would be a band adjustment. dzk007@go.com

4.0 l engines carry auxillary coolers as standard equipment. The most common cause of fluid spill is overfilling. Unlike oil, transmission fluid must be check after the engine is warmed and while idling. If the fluid level is correct, look for sharp bends or crimps in the cooler lines that run from the transmission housing to the radiator core. You may have a partial obstruction from re-positioning of the cooler lines during a previous engine repair.

Transmission lines are all where they are supposed to go, there are no obstructions. Turned out to be front seal. When I put oil in it now it comes right out the front where it connects to the motor. Took 15 quarts to get home, 500 km. Think I wrecked the tranny again? When I pulled in the yard it shifted normal. What's the best way to clean the transmission cooler lines and transmission? I'm putting a new transmission filter in and a new front seal. Anything else I should do?
