Anyone tried to run a 460 with a 2bbl carb? I heard from a local mech. that I might could bring my mileage up to double digits by using a Motorcraft 2bbl (2150?) and then jet it. I am getting 6mpg right now on a wore out Holley 4160. But I do have a Holley 750 double pumper that I could rebuild and rejet if I really need a big carb. I have heard lot of guys talk about getting consistant 8 and 10s with 351's. Is is possible to do that good with a big block? I'm not pulling much with it, so I;m not too worried about torque loss with a smaller carb. Thanks a bunch. jery
a 2bbl is a BAD idea. the throttle bores are bigger in a 2bbl than the primaries in a 4bbl. Try unhooking the secondaries on your 4bbl.
You should be able to at least do 10 mpg. I have an Edelbrock 750 on my 86 F250(4x4, 4 speed, 3.55 gears, 265/75R16's in street trim) and average 13-14 mpg with a criuse speed of about 50(the speed limit here...)
i agree with 82f100swb about the throttle bores.i have a 86 f150 4x4 on 44" swampers,5;13 gears, and a moderately built 514cid big block.c-6 tranny with a 10" stall.i have a holley 850 double pumper and believe it or not, before my stall went south i got about 10mpg.having EVERYTHING matched up is the key.needless to say when my stall died so did my mileage.down to 4mpg.dont let anyone tell you good mileage w/ a big block is impossible!
