Wife's uncle and his family are in Melbourne. He boarded up his windows and decided to sit it out. Wife's aunt's suggestion: after a bad storm, all that's left of the houses are the toilets sticking up, so strap yourself to the toilet and hang on!
I have freinds in Ft Pierce....and a sister in Cleawater. Havent heard from the girl in Ft Pierce, but have heard from my sister. They are not expectin that slow moving biggie till tonight. They dont seem concerned.
The problem with this storm it may not have the Cat 3 winds, however it is going to loiter so long it will do as much damages as one that is fast with high winds. They are reporting that some areas will have over 18 hours of high winds.
Once you live here long enough you become accustomed to hurricanes and the like. Right now we are getting the last bad part of the storm. (just east of tampa) Most of my family has their power knocked out but we got lucky I guess. So far nothing bad has happend to us except for a part of our fence blew down. Lots of branches and little trees everywhere. Worst news here that I know of is the guy who lives across the street from my dad had an oak tree fall on the garage where he keeps his 77 F250. Perfect condition, no dents, scratches or anything. My dad said the tree went right through the wall though and killed the truck. Havent seen it yet but its a sad thing. Holy crap a car just hit the stop sign on our corner. going out to look
I hope everybody comes thru this ok, but watch out here comes Ivan...went from tropical storm to Cat 3 hurricane overnight, and looks to be aimed right at Florida. You folks down South please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.
My wife has family in central FL, Winter Haven, and I have a good friend who lives in Melbourne, as a matter of fact he just retired from the police department two months ago as a Deputy Chief. I have tried to call him the last couple of days but the phones have been out. He's a pretty smart guy so I am sure he is ok. I hope the best for everyone being affected. Hang on tight!

Sorry to disagree but after going through Andrew (Catagory 5) you NEVER get used to hurricanes. Those who have seen the eye of a Cat 3 or higher storm pass over their heads become believers REAL quick. I live in dread and fear of these storms after my experiences in 1992. I am currently in the process of attempting to relocate from Florida and am specifically looking for places to live that are far enough inland that hurricanes do minimal if any damage....ie Atlanta. Many people in Florida kid themselves and say they have been through these storms but frankly not that many have. We went 30 years without a major strike before Andrew and haven't had a Cat 5 hit Florida since 1992. I live less than 30 miles away from a monument that contains the cremeated remains of over 700 bodies from those who died in the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. The old timers say thousands died in that storm but most of their bodies were blown west into Florida Bay. We got really lucky this Labor Day 2004. Frances came ashore in a depleted state and walked across the Florida as a boderline Tropical Storm. It could have been MUCH worse. I looked the tiger in the eye twice in my life. Once in Charleston, SC during Hurricane Hugo and once in Homestead, FL during Hurricane Andrew. That is too many times for my lifetime.
