Need some help I got a 97 Diesel, just installed 2nd alternator. I took the truck down to auto-zone after I installed the first one cause the gauges was on the left side on Normal. Nothing to be coming from the alternator. I pulled it off the truck and we bench tested and it had no output. Installed new alternator and my gauge on the truck is still reading the same. I've checked the wires and connections nothing seems to be bad. Any ideas?? I've been looking on the truck to find something that would cause this, haven't found anything.
You need to verify the alt is working or not working by either getting your own voltmeter, or take it back down to autozone and let them put their machine on it. You can do this yourself if you get a cheap voltmeter, and read the voltage at the battery with the truck off. Then start the truck, and read the battery voltage again. The running voltage should be higher(around 14volts) than the not running voltage(around 12 volts). The factory amp guage is not a very reliable source for info.
If it is not working, see what the voltage is on the field terminal. It should have something on the field to make it charge.
You need to also check the large output wire of the alt. Follow it up till you find a fusible link. That fusible link may be burnt out. This often happens when the alt is changed, but the battery is not disconnected, and the output wire accidently touches a ground somewhere.
