I have an 1984 F-250 w/460 wanting to know about where the wires go to my alternator. the way it was hooked up It has 3 wires, power wire black I think an blue orange wire and an white and black wire. well the white and black wire is not hooked up but the truck apears to be charging ok the wire is hooked up to the alternator but the other end is not hooked up to anything. What is it supposed to be hooked up to.
Leave it hooked up that way. I have never tested it, but have heard the black/white wire from the alt has only about 8 volts.
That's correct. The wire from the alt is coming off the stator and should be about half operating voltage, or about 7V. The original ford chokes used that since that voltage is only present when the engine is actually running. That way you are not heating up your electrically-assisted choke thermostat if you happen to have the key on. Running 12V to one of those original ford units can burn it out.
but5 I could hook it up to an relay so I could run items that only need power in run only, like the ckoke so I can have that space back in the fuse box for the trailer brakes

Yes, you most certainly could. You may have to do some figuring on the relay though, since most common relays run on 12 volts, or 24 volts. You may be able to find a small computer type relay that runs on 5 volts, and then let it drive a more substantial 12 volt automotive relay.
