My front seats are getting worse and worse as time goes on. The seat covers on both are tearing, and the foam is significantly worn down on the drivers side seat.
I have done exhaustive searches online to find seat foam and OEM replacement covers for the Aerostar, all with no results. I would like to try to re do the seats myself, but If I can't find the right foam and covers it will be kind of difficult.
Does anyone know of any companies that sell these things?
I could buy junk yard seats but there is no guarantee on condition or color...
i swapped in different seats in mine. i swapped 91 eclipse seats into mine but the braket made it feel like a truck so i chopped the braket about 3 inches and ive never been happier. ive been thinking about swapping in the windstar seats in place of them because of the nice arm rest, and matching colors.
i have played around with my seats over the last few years. i took the drivers sear out and apart, then added foam into the bottom were the left side was collapsing. i needed something firm around those wires so i used pipe insulation, then covered that with seat foam. with the seaty cover off, i was able to hand sew it together at the rips, that lasted about 1 year, then after that, my wife made a bottom cover, poor fit lead to removal after several months. . last year i came across some cool "ford" seatcovers at autozone. they were for high back car bucket seats, but i modified them slightly, cut out a hole for the arm rest, and i've been happy for about a year. ....i did check into a upholster shop, they wanted 400$ to do just the bottom. he did have a good idea though,he said he would swap the passenger and driver bottoms, since the driver seat was the most worn, and the left side was collapsing. i haven't done that yet though. when i redid the carpet this summer i had to take them out again,i thought about replacement then, but i was up to my ears in carpet trimming.. let us know if you buy any! god luck! rick
my 91 had worn cushions. on long trips I started sitting on a couch cushion to make the trip better. it was to the point that I was sitting on the rails of the seat frame.
in desperation I gutted the seats and cut my couch cushion to the approximate size and stuffed it in there. it was better, but not by much.
I eventually found a set of seats at the junkyard for 125 and they had the inflatable lumbar support in them, and perfect fabric and cushions. same color too.
then I sold the van a few months later! grrr.
now my 95 is starting to show the same collapse. the outer edges go out first for sure. so maybe that flip flop idea might work, switching right and left seat bottoms.
my friend knows this little mexican guy who does car upulstery. and he quoted me 30 bucks per side to rebuild the cushions and frames, using the original covers since they are still in good shape.
30 bucks! what a deal!! i'd go for that. i also thought that ranger or explorer seats would be size appropriate. but would have to be remounted on our aerostar seat frames because of the shape of the floor. anybody try that? there has got to be a baziollion explorers out there! they would have the attached arm rest like the aero's possibly.... just a thought. rick
