Timing gear lifespan
I have a 1980 300 I6 and I have never touched the valves or the timing gear. Is there a recommended maintenance interval for the gears? Or do they outlast my engine? It is running great.

From what I've heard, these gears are nylon. There is no chain, just gear to gear. (Now why couldn't they make all engines that way) They seem to have a very long life. Some people have theirs shear gears, but I don't know why.
Just leave it alone. I understand they're a real bear to remove.

The earlier 300 cid had metal cam and crank gears. There were even two thread pitches a rather course and a fine pitch set. Wear on these was very slight. I rebuilt a bunch of 300's for a newspaper fleet, one tough engine if you mind the maintenance, especially timing. The old distributors with vac and centrifical advance had some issues with advance weight wear allowing excessive advance and eventual engine distruction. I have a couple of pistons and rods I kept, I don't think a I ever saw anything blow apart like they did for that very reason.
