My aerostar is 1990 4.0 RWD. Does anyone know whether this vehicle use the MAP or not? I am sure there is such a sensor for my van. It is located in the firewall above the A/C compressor.There is a three wire connector hooked up ;however, there is no vacuum line to it. If I hook up a vacuum line to it,it shows a code 22(Bad MAP). If I unplug the connector, it also show a code 22. It is fine only if the connector is in and no vacuum line attached. I had been driving like this for 2 years. I check vacuum diagram from Chilton book and it does not show a line to the MAP. Why is there a MAP sensor if it is not being used(No vacuum line attached to it) Thanks.
It is called the 'baro' sensor when used this way. Just tells the ECM what the barometric pressure-and thereby altitude/air density the system is getting today. No vacuum line needed. The MAF sensor does some of what the MAP used to to. Tells the ECM the 'volume' of air and some level of how dense it is, so the ECM can look up the proper fuel squirt time from its table. I guess two gauges are better than one...
They also used to use the same sensor on the Turbo T-bird ... to measure the boost. If you disconnected the 'vacuum' line on the bird, the boost limiter didn't know that you were 'already at full boost'... so it let the turbo do MORE. Not good for the pistons/rings/bottom end, much less the connecting rods.... long term.
