First off, I just did the PCV fix where the PCV output is routed up
to the exhaust tree instead of at the back of the manifold. This
forum is awesome! Thanks...
As I was going through the system, I've run into a question. At the
start of the PCV system, it has to draw air from the air filter box
and it does so with a long black tube that runs from the filter box
to the oil filler neck. As I understand it, it should draw "filtered" air.
But the spot at where this tube hooks into the filter box... it looks
like it would draw unfiltered air. It's all factory, it connects at the
side of the box toward the bottom. Not filtered at all unless I'm
loosing my mind.............?
check your parts store, in Canada they run about $5.95 at the quick oil change places. if you open up your air box (four screws to change air filter) you will see that the hose from the breather clips onto a square black thingy. (yes I know getting technical now ) remove that clip on the outside of the air box that holds it in and remove black thingy. This is actually the air cleaner, if intact it will have paper fins similar to the main air cleaner. you can try and superglue some medium density foam in there, as long as it will breath, but for 6 bucks, take the black thingy to the parts guy and ask him for a new one!
Just my 2 cents, which being Canadian and all, ain't worth much!

I must have sneezed and missed something...what is the "pcv fix"? I am interested because I have had a very peculiar problem with my 1992 5L truck. After about 5 minutes running, it suddenly begins pouring out thick volumes of oil smoke. Almost no power when this happens. Thanks!
I just bought a new breather filter... the previous owner of this
truck was Joe Q. Idiot and NEVER changed anything, including the PCV,
so oil had backed up into the air filter box...
The PCV fix... you'll find it if you do a search on this forum. There is
a discussion, two pages long, which tells all about it. The name of the
discussion is "PCV valve". Good luck!
