Shouds are not always necessary but do help in cooling. It helps to suck the air through the radiator instead of from next to the radiator.
I assume your electric fan bolts right up to the radiator and therefore it is not necessary (didn't think of that last night when u IMed me, sry).
The fan on the stock setup is a few inches away from the radiator..so they use a shroud to help it suck the air through the radiator instead of air from the surrounding area. It also doubles as protection from getting hit by the blade.
I really don't think that if the fan you have is mounted tight to the radiator that the shroud will do any good. If you can mount it away from the surface, then it will help.
Most electric fans have a built in shroud. If you bought one that is just a fan and no housing, then you should use your factory shroud.
