The switch on my 94 Aerostar is feeling weird and chiming w/o the key in the ignition. My Haynes manual says that it needs to be replaced by the dealer. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Also I'm not sure if the problem is in the switch or the cylinder?
It's the cylinder. Easy to remove if you have the key to it. Remove the plastic from the column. Put key in ignition and turn forwards to run position. There is a little round pin type latch for the cylinder. push the pin in and pull out the cylinder at the same time. The wire connected to it is for the chime. If you don't want chimes any more you can make sure the wire stays ungrounded. If you are going to be there a while you may want to disconnect the battery before doing this.
When you buy the new one, the Ford dealer will need to match your key to the proper "type", there are 5 different sets. Then, you take the new key and old key and a locksmith will transfer the door portion of your old key to the new key.
While you're in there, and this is a fair amount more work, check your column shift tube for cracks. If this breaks, you may not be able to get home. The new parts are about $40 for the tube, shift rod & two bushings. It's an updated design, not sure when the came out with it. Maybe 94 had the new design (I would hope so!).
