My 390 is smoked im gonna get a re-man from precision engine they list a 428 for 1200 +500 core they wont take my 390 as a core. The 428 should bolt right up to the fmx cast iron tranny but what about engine mounts?I never see the 428 talked about as much as the 352- 390- 427. WHY?thanks for any advice. maddy
428 is a direct replacement. It is a fantastic option, and actually does get quite a bit of forum time. By ownership, the engines in this forum are probably from top to bottom:
360
390
352 (Many think they have 352 because its cast in the block, when in reality it's a 360 or 390)
428
427
Maddy:
The engine mounts will work just fine. The issue you may have is in the balancing of the 428. The guru's will correct me if wrong, but the 428 was externally balanced at the flywheel/flexplate. The normal recommendation is internal balancing or grabbing the flywheel/flex plate that was once associated with the 428 engine. Check to see where your potential purchase is balanced and go from there. The 390 probably won't core as there is no guarantee that your 390 block can handle a 428 bore, just a guess of course...
True. I forgot about the need for a 428 flywheel. The other option is to have your machine shop do an internal balance. It is done all the time. They just add heavy metal to the crank during the balance process to eliminate the need for the special flywheel.
Just a heads Up- its best to have any engine Internally balanced at the shop thats buiding it anyway... that way you never have to worry about a flex plate or harmonic balancer..ever again..and internal balancing is more precise than external...
If that isn't the truth I don't know what is. Wouldn't it have been nice if ford started using the 428 in trucks to give them a little extra torque. I guess the 390 wasn't short enough on it to justify doing that.

Stop and think about it Sean and Barry....I was roddin in the late 60s and thru the 70s and the start of the 80s...
Oil companies dectate all this BS to us and the car manurfactures, are there first to hear about it.... Thus for back to the rod and happy consumer's....
Is...if we build something in our R&D shop? will thet buy it No matter what gas costs? and the oil caompany says well hell they'll burn more gas and are profits go up!! Americans, and which IM Proudy!! Are in love with are cars!
I had a guy ask me the other night what kind of mileage would my new Big block get??? I told him I didnt give a rat's ***..it was being built for my pleasure and only my pleasure..and if it got 4MPG..I would be happy with what ever it got...
I have other's in my driveway that get 44mpg..and if Greg's getting 10?? he should consider himself lucky!!
Ok..off my soap box now!!! LMAO!!
Russ...And to many Cube's and CFM!!!!! and I love it!!
Russ, are you drinking again? (assuming you ever stopped)
As for my mileage, I'll start tracking it. I finally got my gas gauge working right! I filled up the fuel cell, and it went right to the "F" :-) I've got a shop full of sending units and gauges if anybody needs anything :-)
I agree, nothing at all wrong with a 428, except it's availability!

I could use a good sending unit for my behind the seat fuel tank, mine only goes up to 3/4. I read that some of the guys bent their's this way and that and never could get it right.

have you checked the float? it's the usual suspect.
Just buy the 428 crank and build a 410. Much cheaper than tracking down a 428 block. If you must have a 428, find a 360 block that will take a .080" overbore and go from there.
I am surprised more people aren't building 410's on this forum.
