I recently bought a 04 250 6.0. During the first 500 miles I got aprox 17.5 MPG with no strange noises noticeable. Since then I have notices loss of low end power, 14.5 MPG, what sounds to me as an air growl and the truck now POPs when you lift off the accelerator going up a hill or any time you go from 1/4 throttle to 0.
My dealer said it was normal and that everyone else has the same complaint about the 6.0. They also do not have anyone who has been to training on the 6.0.
Can anyone give me an idea on what to check. I have a 99 powerstroke and have heard all the noises that are considered normal. Never had anything develop like this before and after only 500 miles. It does seem to be getting louder.
I don't know what the problem is, I'm sure there is someone who can help. But I do know your dealer is full of it. Those are not normal problems for the 6.0. It sounds like you need to find a better dealership with a better shop with a diesel tech.
Welcome to this site and good luck!
The 6.0 is a new engine and I think your right, I need to find a tech who is trained on them.
The sound is a like a blow back or pressure back through some sort of flapper/door spring or solenoid controlled I do not know. I will get to the bottom of this though.
First and foremost get your truck away from your dealer as fast as you possibly can. Based on your statements I wouldn't let them change the air in my tires.
Other members here will surely respond with good advise.
If they have no experience or knowledge of the workings of the 6.0 how could your dealer have any idea what is normal or abnormal.
This is obviously a dealer who cares little of the product he sells.
Interview as many Ford dealers as you please and specifically ask if they have any certified diesel techs. If the answer is none...ask them to refer you to a dealer that does. Then immediately move on.
If they do...ask how many techs and how many years of experience. Get kind of a tele resume so to speak. Then take your truck to them as if it was the first service trip. Forget about what the lst joker said.
Can't believe it. Highest profit vehicle on the lot and won't support it.
BTW: By your description, these syptoms are not normal.

I would definately make sure you only have a diesel tech work on your truck. If your dealer doesn't have one, find another dealer. You will save yourself a lot of time and hassle with someone who at least has remote training on a diesel. By the way, how can it be that a dealer could sell a diesel but not have a diesel tech?? What happens when it needs repairs?? I've never heard of that.
I just had my 04 6.0 in for lack of poer at low end and a hesitation when I apply the accellerator. They replaced the turbo, but I still get the hesitation (the hesitation is accompanied by a puff of smoke and yet not much noise). Power at low end went up to normal. It goes back tomorrow.
I had the smae wapppapppaa sound that Tim is referring to. It seemed like it started at around 1200 miles and has been doing it ever since. My dealer also told me that it was normal for the turbo diesel, and that they all do it. I only hear it when I am accelerating and then let off the gas. My truck has almost 11,000 miles.

First step is to find a dealer with a certified diesel tech. There is a number of things that could be (sensors, VGT actuator, etc.) So, find a good tech and don't look back. Your dealer is wrong.
Thank you for your response. Yes, a wapapapa is the sound in question. Like a shutter slapping closed rapidly. The dealer tech said they all (the 6.0s) do this when you quickly let off the throttle. Do you have this sound?
I've only noticed the turbo burp when letting off of the accelerator pedal rapidly after hard acceleration. I think this is the normal part Tim speaks of. Now if the truck burps when letting off after mild accerleration, then I don't think that is normal. Don't know what to say about the loss in low end power, other than it might be related to the "dead pedal" syndrome I read about here on the forums.

By the way, I'm assuming the burb or pop you hear is because of excess pressure in the turbo. The tech term would be turbo blow off from a blow off valve. However it's not normal for your blow off valve to be your intercooler boot. haha.. I guess I just don't drive it hard enough..
