Air Conditioning question

1997 Explorer, 5.0. Loses vacuum to the heater control valve on the heater hose at normal AC. Vents operate normally. AC works fine in max position. Replaced rotary vac/elec switch. Vac to the heater valve works normally in other positions, just not in normal AC.

I have a 97 4.0 L and had the same problem. The quick fix was to put a cable tie on the valve to keep it closed and prevent hot coolant from entering the heater core. You have to remove the cable tie when you want heat. The final fix was to repair the broken blend door by following the excellent directions found at the beginning of this forum. They are in the "sticky" section and can save you big $$. I don't know exactly why but when I made the repair the AC worked like it should, vacuum was restored even when MAX was not used. The blend door is controlled by an electric motor, must be something like a switch or position sensor in there that can tell when the door is positioned to allow heat. Sorry I can't be more specific about how fixing the blend door affected the AC vacuum. Maybe someone else can provide the details??

Many thanks to those who read and replied. I confess that I did not read the archived posts and it appears that the infamous blend door may be at fault. I will check and advise.
