460 running hot

Hey guys, I have rad thru the topics to try and find a probelm like the one i have no luck. 1977 f-250, 460, automatic, factory air (134a). Been going to Lake Havasu for over 12 yrs. Last year the truck started to run hot so i started to try fix the p[robelm before this years trip. repaled the rad with a 4 core, got rid of the fan clutch, used a fan clutch eliminator kit,(now runs full time), new water pump and a thermostat (180 degree). but this puppy will still overheat. In the desert the needle goes past the middle when i climb hills it goes to the L on the NORMAL guage. If i leave it idling will climb to the L. I just dont know what to do anymore. Please if anybody can steer me into the right direction i would really appreciate it.

Have you tried replacing the temp sensor just to see if it's flaky? Also, do you still have the radiator shroud in place (ultra-critical!).

Hey Brad, yes i do have the original shroud in place. I will go and buy a new sender, but i know that it is overheating by the some antifreeze that is boiling over to the street. You know that this is very frustrating cause i used to be able to run anywhere in this truck without having to worry about things like this. i have had this bad boy since 1984.

thank you

If it's puking water onto the street then the sender is not an issue. I'm presuming you replaced all the hoses when you replaced the radiator.

A recovery unit should stop the overflowing onto the street problem. Also after my 78 doing the same thing over and over I discovered that on these models you are only supposed to fill them to about 1" below the cap or they will spit up on you. One critical element of engine temp. is your timeing. If it's off, maybe chain stretch, it can cause heat problems. I have also found that after serviceing an automatic transmission in need my temp. gauge runs lower. How long has it been since you serviced or had your transmission serviced?

Check Block

My 460 in my F350 had the same problem, turned out the block was pretty scaled up inside, had to pull the freeze plugs out and do a good rinse of the block. Not fun. Before you do that, check the lower hose, make sure it's not closing when the motor revs up - if the internal spring has rusted away, the hose will collapse at higher rpms, cutting the water flow off. Also, possible that the impeller on the water pump gets rusty & gets holes in it, then doesn't push water like it should. My motor obviously had been neglected & run with rusty water before I got it.
