currently I have a decently built 400 with dual 2.25" pipes into 40 series flow masters. This is a dual exhaust without a H pipe and has the stock manifolds on it. the mufflers dump out into turn downs. It is just way too loud for me. I love the sound when I am out wheeling with it but on the road driving is insanely loud.
I am looking to rework this system myself. I can get a Y pipe from flow master that will take my 2.25" pipes and go into one single 3" pipe. This will also give me more room under the bronco since space is limited now with all the drive train mods I have done.
What I am looking for is a 3" muffler which does not rob my power, has a nice tone yet is quiet enought to talk to the person sitting next to you.
Jopey, if you want a truly quiet performance muffler, get a Hooker Aero Chamber. It is designed to give a scavenging effect and also is the quietest of the performance types. I have one on an Explorer, and gained a noticeable increase in low end torque and 1-2 more mpg. It has a nice low rumble upon accelleration, but is very quiet at cruise speeds.
I have heard that Aerochambers are pretty loud in a dual application somewhere near 91 Db. on a 5.0 mustang and that was right at cruise speeds. Off the top of my head, even though I don't like them I would have to say superturbos.
The only non stock mufflers I've run have been Dynomax super turbos. One set was on my stock 351M, true dual set up, no cross pipe, and it was pretty good, had a good rumble without being overly loud and my interior is pretty stripped out on my F150. I had the super turbos on my 99 Mustang Cobra too with an X-pipe and high flow cat, and it was nice. It would growl at WOT, but at cruising speeds, 3000-3500 rpm (I had 4.10s) it was very acceptable.
I haven't decided yet, but now that I rebuilt my 351 to a 400 and added headers, I'm thinking I'll run the dynomax super turbos again, but I haven't decided. I can't handle the flowmasters on long drives.
Im running the 50 series performance suv mufflers and am happy with them. Just enough sound to know its not stock and can still hold a conversation at highway speeds.
throwing a tail pipe on there will make it substantially quieter in the truck, as the sound will be coming out the back. as opposed to the turn down you are currenly using.
I just put used super turbos on my Dodge, they dump right behind the cab, I have to finish the bends in the pipes so that they will seal at the manifolds but I will post back and let you know how they sound.
Well, I got the exaust finished, other than the small leak at one of the flanges they are pretty quiet. They do vibrate the cab and my head pretty bad because of where the dumps are though. Move them back and they would be pretty good.
