speedometer sensor

A while ago I had asked about my speedometer jumping around. I was told that it could be a speed control part (sensor) located somewhere in or around the rear differential. I have a 1996 E-250 cargo van.

What I need to know is if this is something that I can change myself or not. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but wanted to know more. Like location of part, things to look for etc.

Any help would be apreciated. Thank you.

I don't know about on the vans for sure...but on my dad's 96 150 it was right on top of the rear pumpkin. Unplug the wire and take out a bolt and it pulled right out.

My 2000 PSD seems to be 3 mph slower than those radar detector things the cops have on the road all the time around here. I have regular stock tires and wheels. Is this common?

If your basing the difference in speed to radar guns, it wont always be right. The guns need to calibrated alot. So I wouldnt use use that as your guide line. Most departments in fact, are required to calibrate the guns before and after evey shift.
